MA Promise

MA Promise is Marin Academy's commitment to ensuring the most talented students from all backgrounds across the Bay Area have access to a Marin Academy education.
Marin Academy is thrilled to announce MA Promise, the school's historic commitment to ensuring that the most talented students in the Bay Area have access to an MA education. Beginning with the class of 2023, Marin Academy will be free for all admitted students whose families earn less than $100,000 per year (and have assets typical of this income range)And while a family whose income exceeds $100,000 per year might not qualify for free tuition under MA Promise, the School will continue to meet 100% of demonstrated financial need for ALL admitted families who apply for tuition assistance. Over the last five years, families on the MA Tuition Assistance program have had a median annual income of between $135,000 and $150,000, and have paid a median tuition of $9,800 per year.

List of 6 frequently asked questions.

  • How do I apply?

To be considered for the MA Promise, students must submit both the regular MA application via Ravenna and the standard tuition assistance application process, outlined here.
  • When will I be notified of my acceptance?

We release all decisions on March 22, 2019. If you're admitted and have applied for our tuition assistance program, you'll be awarded your grant at that time. All families whose total income is under $100,000 per year can expect to pay $0 for tuition, assuming assets typical to family income level.
  • What do you mean by "typical assets?"

Families whose assets are significantly above what is typical for their income level might not qualify for free tuition under MA Promise, but might still qualify for some level of tuition assistance.
  • What if our family income is more than $100,000 per year?

While a family whose income exceeds $100,000 per year might not qualify for free tuition under the MA Promise program, MA remains committed to meeting 100% of demonstrated financial need for ALL admitted families. We are committed to funding families whose incomes range from $100,000 per year to $400,000 per year. Our average annual tuition assistance award asks families to pay approximately $9,800 per year for an MA education.
  • If I'm admitted and receive funding, will I receive funding for all four years?

MA commits to four years of funding for every admitted student receiving tuition assistance assuming a family's financial situation remains the same. Returning families are required to submit supporting financial documents every year to ensure our funding is distributed to families with greatest financial need.
  • What about non-tuition expenses?

MA is pleased to cover non-tuition expenses for ALL participants in our tuition assistance program at the same rate of their tuition assistance package. For example, if a family pays 50% tuition, they can expect MA to cover 50% of textbook costs, Bring Your Own Device computer costs, Minicourse costs, and other costs associated with the academic and co-curricular experience.
