The Mask You Live In

Film Screening: The Mask You Live In, Thursday, October 22 at 7:00 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center

As part of this year's Conference on Democracy events, we are thrilled to present The Mask We Live In. Made by Jennifer Siebel Newsom and the same team that brought Miss Representation, the multi-award winning film about images of girls and women in media, The Mask You Live In follows boys and young men as they struggle to stay true to themselves while negotiating America’s narrow definition of masculinity. In this session, Caroline Heldman, Associate Professor of Politics at Occidental College, and Ashanti Branch, Assistant Principal at Montera Middle School and Founder/Executive Director of the Ever Forward Club, both of whom appear in the film, will discuss the ways in which images of masculinity in media complicate the formation of identity for boys and men and impact their relationships with others.
