Lacrosse - Varsity Boys

The Marin Academy Boys Lacrosse program, founded in 2008, has a long tradition of success both on the field and in helping our student athletes learn the values of teamwork, discipline, accountability, hard work and resilience. While we strive for a great win-loss record each season, we know that true success is better measured by our own growth and development as people and teammates. We honor the game, our school, families, friends and community by conducting ourselves with humility and grace in both victory and defeat and never let the focus on winning betray our commitment to sportsmanship and supporting each other’s success. We believe deeply in servant leadership and ask the senior members of our program to demonstrate their commitment by prioritizing the development and inclusion of others. Our program has both varsity and junior varsity teams, and we welcome newcomers to the sport. We focus our practice time on skill-building and developing fundamentals to ensure that everyone has an opportunity to learn the basics of the game before moving on to more advanced concepts and strategy. Our teams play separate game schedules but combine for portions of practice to ensure that all players have the opportunity to work with both varsity and JV coaches.

We have a tenured coaching staff who are deeply committed to the program and community. Skyler Hopkins joined the MA coaching staff as the offensive coordinator in 2017 and took over as the head coach in 2019. Coach Hopkins grew up in Maryland where he played at the McDonogh School in Baltimore. He went on to play at Middlebury College where he earned First-Team All-NESCAC and All-American Honors in 2009. He has been coaching lacrosse professionally since 2011 and works regularly with local rec and club programs year-round. John Hutchinson joined the coaching staff in 2015 as the defensive coordinator. He grew up in the Bay Area, attended the Branson School where he earned All-American honors before attending Tulane University where he played for 4 years. Hutch is a full-time member of the MA faculty where he teaches history and is the junior class dean. His presence on campus as both a coach and teacher provides our program with a unique level of support to ensure all lacrosse players thrive both on the field and in the classroom. Our coaches teach an up-tempo, competitive, game-oriented style of lacrosse that forces players to constantly read and react to a dynamic environment. We optimize every practice plan to maximize repetitions, believe deeply in “free play” and celebrate creativity and teamwork in everything we do. We have sent many players on to play at the Division 1 and Division 3 collegiate levels and work closely with players during their college search process to identify target schools, engage coaches and support them during the recruiting process.

Our program has enjoyed tremendous success on the field. Since 2017 we have a combined record of 70-18 (80%). We are 2x NCS D2 Champions (2012 & 2018), D2 Runner-Ups (2017) and D1 Runner-Ups (2019). We are 10x Bay League Champions and undefeated (36-0) in the Bay League since 2017. Our program has supported 13 All-Americans, over 100 All-League selections, the 2020 Bob Scott Award Winner and member of the 2022 U.S. U-18 National Team. We love hearing from prospective students or fans of the sport so please reach out to Coach Hopkins with questions about our program or upcoming schedule – skhopkins@ma.org
