MA Athletics Information 2019-2020

MA's athletic department is excited to welcome all of the new faces to our campus. Marin Academy’s Athletic Mission Statement:
Marin Academy’s athletic mission is to develop scholar athletes in mind, body, and spirit.  We ask our athletes to commit to their respective teams, to act with integrity, and to compete with sportsmanship, character, and pride.

Interscholastic athletics at Marin Academy are an integral part of the school’s overall educational program.  With 65% of the student body being represented in both boys and girls sports, the athletic program has a unique opportunity to teach the valuable life lessons of commitment, goal-setting, self-discipline, self-sacrifice, teamwork, time management, accountability, resiliency and sportsmanship through the experiential learning-lens of athletics.

There are a total of 19 boys and girls sports offered at Marin Academy.  Below you will find how the sports are organized by season and gender, as well as the coaches’ names and contact information.

Marin Academy’s 2019-20 Athletic Start Dates:
Tryouts for each program will coincide with the start of each season.  As always, athletes may not begin the next season until they complete their current season.  There may be optional open field/open gym practices before a season begins.  Athletes should contact the head coach of the program to check on these activities.
Fall Season: August 12, 2019
Winter Season: November 4, 2019
Spring Season: February 10, 2020

Athletic Interest Form:
The Athletic department is asking all parents and/or students interested in playing a Fall Sport to complete this Google Form.  This helps the department ensure the names of students interested in or planning to play a sport have the necessary forms completed prior to the start of the Fall season on August 12th. Please contact Athletic Trainer Aaron Gill, ATC ’94 with any questions!
 
Summer Athletics at Marin Academy:
Various MA athletic teams will be having organized practices, games and camps during the summer.  These events are NOT mandatory for anyone; however, they provide a great opportunity to meet future teammates and coaches.  You do not have to attend summer events to participate on a team during the school year.  

Girls & Boys Cross Country
  • Coaches will conduct a pre-summer 5k endurance fitness assessment on Thursday, May 30 at Piper Park in Larkspur starting at 4:00 p.m. and ending at 4:45 p.m.
  • Summer training workouts can be found on the 2019 XC Season Information Page
  • Practice will begin on Monday, August 12.  Location is TBD.  Please see the 2019 XC Season Information Page for more details
  • Coaches will conduct a post-summer 5k endurance fitness assessment on Monday, August 19th. Students can meet either at the MA circle at 3:45 p.m. or at Piper Park at 4:00 p.m.  Assessment and workout will be completed by 5:00 p.m. and vans will return to MA by 5:15 p.m.

Girls Tennis & Boys Tennis
  • Head coach Geoff Martinez will be holding tennis camp sessions throughout the summer at the Marin Tennis Club.  The program will take place Monday through Thursday (4 days) from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. beginning June 10 and running through August 15
  • The cost for the camp will be $200 per week, or $60 per day for a drop in session.  Campers can register on the Marin Tennis Club website, mail in payment, or bring payment to the first day of camp
  • The camp is open to grades 8-12 for those who identify at an advanced beginner, intermediate, or advanced level.  Age requirement exceptions can be made for tournament players.  The camp is designed to prepare players for high school tennis.  You will be working on footwork and preparation, stroke production, drills, and match play and strategy.  Please contact Geoff Martinez for more information (415-225-6912)
  • Girls Tennis tryouts will be held on Monday, August 12 at Marin Tennis Club from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.  Please meet at Marin Tennis Club (925 Belle Ave., San Rafael, CA 94901)
Boys Water Polo
  • Head Coach Zvi Gvishi will be holding a water polo camp July 30 through August 2 from 10:00 a.m to 12:30 p.m., and August 5 through August 9 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the MA Pool.  Camp fee is $150 for both weeks, OR $100 per camper for 1 week.  Camp registration can be found here.  Please contact Zvi Gvishi directly with any questions: zvi.gvishi@yahoo.com 
  • First day of practice will be Monday, August 12
  • Practices will be held 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the MA Pool
Girls Water Polo

  • Official practices will begin on Tuesday, August 13. Coaches Mary Collie and Jamie Collie will be returning from their duties at a National Team Tournament in Spain and arrive back in Marin late Monday night
  • Practice times from the week of August 13 will be 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.  On Friday, August 16, the team will head to a scrimmage jamboree at Cal Maritime.  Game times are TBD, but usually occur in the afternoon and evening

Volleyball:
  • Open Gym: June 4th - July 1st Tuesday/Thursday 10:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
  • Preseason: August 5th - August 9th 9:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. 
  • Open Gym and Preseason will be held in the New Gym
  • Varsity Tryouts will take place on 8/12 and 8/13
  • JV Tryouts will take place on 8/12, 8/13 and 8/14
  • All MA Volleyball tryouts will be held from 4:00 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. in the New and Auxiliary Gyms

Boys Basketball
  • Open Gyms dates will be July 7, 28 from 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. August 11, 25 from 12:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. and August 18 from 3:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.
  • Practice Tuesdays and Thursdays for the Month of June from 4:30 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.
  • Varsity Lick-Wilmerding Tournament June 8-10 June 15-17 and June 22-24 at San Francisco City College.  Marin County Tournament June 29-30. Times TBD.
  • Freshmen Summer League Dates: TBD – more information coming soon

Girls Basketball:
  • Coach Nita will be running a basketball skills and conditioning camp for boys and girls grades 8-12.  Camps dates are as follows: June 17-21 and June 24-28.  Camp will run from 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. The cost is $250 per week.  For more information please contact Coach Nita (nita@battletestedinc.com)
  • Preseason conditioning/weight training and open gyms will begin in September for those of you NOT playing a fall sport.  Please be on the lookout for dates and times.  All workouts will take place on MA campus.

MA Athletics REQUIRED Medical Paperwork:
  • Athletic Medical Forms
    • Athletic Department medical paperwork can be found on SportsWare Online
    • New students and their parents will be provided with login information from the school
  • As a reminder, ALL student-athletes must:
    • Complete all athletic medical forms annually.
    • Have a pre-participation physical completed and signed by a physician annually
  • These forms must be completed and uploaded to SportsWare Online before the student-athlete can participate in any tryouts, practices, scrimmages or games. Please contact our Athletic Trainer, Aaron Gill, at (415) 482-3292 or by e-mail at agill@ma.org with questions.
Pre-Participation Physicals
  • Dr. Kristin Wingfield, a local primary care sports medicine physician, will be on campus on Monday, August 12th, from 10:00am-12:00pm offering athletic physicals. The physicals will take place in the athletic training clinic/Wellness Center, located in the Science & Innivation Center. Cost for a pre-participation physical with Dr. Wingfield is $25 per athlete.  To sign up for a physical, please click HERE.  If you are unable to make this date, Dr. Wingfield will be back in August for students still needing to complete a physical.  Please note: students are not required to see Dr. Wingfield for a physical.  We offer this as a service to our student-athletes. ImPACT Testing
    • ImPACT concussion testing is mandatory for all student-athletes at Marin Academy as one component of our comprehensive concussion management program. Freshmen, Juniors, and any other student-athletes who have not previously been tested at MA are required to take a baseline tests at the beginning of the season.  The baseline testing schedule can be found here Please contact our Athletic Trainer, Aaron Gill, at (415) 482-3292 or by e-mail at agill@ma.org.
