Everyone Has a Story
Record Your Story This Thanksgiving
Dave Isay, Founder of StoryCorps
Students and parents welcome
Tuesday, November 12 at 7:00 p.m. in the BBLC Lecture Hall
We are thrilled to welcome Dave Isay to Marin Academy as part of our 2019-2020 Parent Ed speaker series. Dave founded StoryCorps in 2003, has been honored with six Peabody Awards, granted a MacArthur Genius Fellowship, awarded the TED Prize in 2015, and published numerous New York Times bestsellers. StoryCorps strives to preserve and share humanity’s stories in order to build connections between people and create a more just and compassionate world. It reminds us of our shared values and teaches the importance of listening by underscoring the basic principle that everyone’s story matters. Virtually every conversation recorded by StoryCorps (over 200,000 interviews) is archived in conjunction with the Library of Congress as a resource for future generations.
During his presentation, Dave will introduce you to some of the most heart-wrenching, humorous and beautiful stories. He has a knack for bringing together people for simple conversations and teasing out the stories that make us who we are. Maybe you have heard some of these exchanges on National Public Radio or on your social media feed, or maybe you've heard these stories at your own family's dinner table.
This Thanksgiving, add your own story to the collection by downloading the app at The Great Thanksgiving Listen. Bring your student to hear Dave speak, and they can learn how to record their own family history.
Their recordings find the unexpected in the otherwise ordinary:
They encourage us to look past uncomfortable differences and find binding similarities:
They help us cling to beauty when faced with unimaginable tragedy:
And they cause us to question the little things we’ve stopped noticing:
