The Canvas Bag Initiative
The Eco-Council’s Canvas Bag Initiative, inaugurated in 2006, grew out of our awareness that, from the perspective of sustainability, the best answer to the confounding question of “paper or plastic” is neither. The initiative supports the idea that if we return to our grandparents’ practice of taking to the store our own reusable set of bags, we then reduce the amount of non-biodegradable plastic polluting our world and we save a few trees.
The bags we distribute are manufactured locally with organic cotton and union labor, and each one sports the original design of MA’s logo, the sequoia tree, created by the late MA faculty member Barbara Gardner. Also printed on the bags is a short list of ecologically mindful hints composed by students serving on the Eco-Council.
The bags are available for $12 each from Anayansi Aranda-Yee (aarandayee@ma.org). All proceeds help to fund other projects sponsored by the Eco-Council.
