CROSSROADS AT MARIN ACADEMY
Summer Employment Opportunities
6th, 7th, and 8th Grade Humanities
6th, 7th, and 8th Grade Sciences
Overview of Crossroads
Created in 2001, Crossroads is a year-round program for sixth, seventh, and eighth grade public school students from the San Rafael area. Students apply to the program at the end of fifth grade and commit to the program for a three-year period. The centerpiece of the program is an intensive, five-week session during the summer. During these sessions, students engage in academic classes, arts instruction, recreation and fieldtrips. The summer classes are 70 minutes in length, small (5 to 7 students), focused on building skills, and designed around meaningful and relevant culminating projects.
Between summer sessions, students receive after-school tutoring during the school year. There is also a Saturday School program during the school year that occurs once per month. The major objective of Crossroads is to equip students with the skills they need for success in middle school, high school, college, and beyond. We believe that these students are at an important crossroads in their lives, and are committed to providing them with the support, skills, and information to improve their access to opportunities of which they may not be aware.
Overview of the Positions
Crossroads seeks three humanities and three sciences teachers for the upcoming 2008 summer session. Each of these individuals will be responsible for designing and implementing a five-week, theme-based curriculum that focuses on building skills, is relevant to our students' lives, and culminates in a major project that will be showcased at the closing Festival. Each teacher leads two 70-minute classes daily (one preparation). Other responsibilities include engaging with students during breakfast and lunch, serving as a club leader, supporting while on field trips, planning special activities, preparing for Festival, and others as they present themselves. Summer 2008 dates are: Faculty Orientation June 23 - June 27 (1 week), Summer Session June 30 - August 2 (5 weeks), Wrap-up August 4 - August 5 (2 days).
Compensation
$4000 stipend. In addition, breakfast and lunch are provided daily to all students and staff during 5-week summer session.
Qualifications
We seek experienced, professional teachers who are excited about and skilled in working with middle school students from mid-to-low income families. Candidates must have expertise in their discipline and be creative, independent, flexible, and cooperative. While Crossroads is an academic program at its core, physical activity is a prominent component - we want teachers who like to play, and are not afraid to get their hands dirty.
