International Studies Emphasis

International Studies Emphasis

The International Studies Emphasis (ISE) gives Marin Academy juniors and seniors seeking a richer educational experience in global education and a wider world perspective the chance to hear and discuss important issues in forums such as the World Affairs Council (in San Francisco and San Rafael), the Commonwealth Club (in San Francisco) and events at U.C. Berkeley. Last year, for example, these are some of the distinguished people that students heard:

  • Anthony Zinni, the Commander in Chief of the Central Command from 1997 to 2000, addressing current U.S. foreign policies
  • A panel of former Secretary of State George Shultz, Secretary of Defense William Perry, and nuclear scientist William Drell discussing a world free of nuclear weapons
  • The former president of Peru, Alejandro Toledo, describing current political trends in Latin America.
  • The Colombian artist Fernando Botero at U.C at the opening of his exhibit on torture at the Abu Ghraib prison.
  • Professors, journalists and authors deal with topics such as Asia's economies, North Korea's nuclear threat, alternatives to oil, the Taliban, and the role of NGOs in the world.

Students wishing to join the ISE program and have their participation recorded on their transcript and diploma need to attend at least four off-campus events and should consult the Course Catalog under Special Curricular and Co-curricular Programs for specific courses to take in literature, history, world language and art. Seniors must complete a final project.

Signed permission slips may be faxed to 415.453.8538.
